Back from Greece

We spent last week on the Greek island Santorini and the holiday was very nice. The weather was sunny and perfect and it was great to spend a few days without a busy schedule. Since Santorini is a rather small island it was convenient to move around, either by foot or by rental car or quadcycle. I will put some pictures in the web album later.

Today Tanya went home to Novokuznetsk to be at home during her father’s birtday and her grandma’s last part of her funeral. This means that Freja and I have to manage on our own at home. I will go home during lunch to take her out and with a long evening walk I think that will make her satisfied.

Today in the evening I put up a fence in the garden so Freja can not escape the garden easily. I hope that will make it easier to let her be in the garden on her own if she likes to when I am at home.

Weekend in Adliswil

After coming home from Siberia there has been two more normal weeks but they have been enhanced by two friends coming and staying a few days. First came Sasha, a guy doing his PhD in northern Italy, and then Rasmus, my old time friend and once flat mate, from Stockholm. We did some sight seeing, e.g. a car trip to Rigi, and last Saturday we went to Nordiska’s kräftskiva with Rasmus and Sam.

Today in the afternoon we have been walking in our neighborhood mountains, around Felsenegg, with Freja and Sam. On the way back we passed by a self service shop attached to a farm, where one can buy locally produced delicious food and drinks. After writing on a text pad what one is buying, one simple puts the money in a hole in the wall and walks out with the groceries. I can imagine that this concept won’t work everywhere but obviously it works well enough around here which is very nice and cool.

Except for walking we have also been doing some practical stuff today. I gave the car some much needed care and Tanya has been doing her first major work with the sewing machine. Earlier on I used to be the operator but now she is more skilled than I (not too difficult in this case) and seems to enjoy the creative process, at least when the sewing device adheres to her often vocal and explicit directions 🙂

Last Friday I did my last day for the project I have been working in for the last 26 months at Credit Suisse. I expect next week to be a soft start in my new project though since I will start with four days of training (strictly speaking not related to the new project). I also expect quite a lot of work during the autumn to get into the new project which is supposed to be a “high pressure project”.

For the coming two months we have plans for Greece (both), Russia (Tanya), Norway and Sweden (Jonas). We start off by ending our fragmented holiday (part three) with a week in Santorini, then Tanya will go back to Novokuznetsk for the third part of her grandmother’s funeral (the finishing part after 40 days). In October I will go for Norway and Sweden for errands and pleasure. Bis gleich!

Tomskaya Pisanitsa

We arrived without problems to Novosibirsk and got picked up by Tanya’s cousin Natasha who lives there. After sleeping a few hours, Natasha showed us the city. We walked in the old parts of the city and along river Ob. I had heard before that there is not too much to see in Novosibirsk but of course such a big city as Novosibirsk, third biggest in Russia, has its highlights. The area around Ob is very accessible and people were sitting along the shoreline and could walk easily there from the park in front of the theater for example.

On Sunday morning we packed Natasha’s Golf, the trunk seemed to be made to fit our luggage exactly, and went to Tomskaya Pisanitsa 30 km outside of Kemerovo. Tanya’s parents, Liubov and Alexander, met us there and we stayed there during the afternoon. At Tomskaya Pisanitsa there are old paintings of elks etcetera on the mountains along river Tom. We did not succeed to actually see the paintings since the path there was blocked for some reason, but we enjoyed the area anyway. There was a very nice view over river Tom and in the park, there were bears, a wolf, foxes, etcetera. After a tasty picnic, we went with Tanya’s parents to Novokuznetsk via sightseeing in Kemerovo. Alexander and Liubov have bought a new car, a Volkswagen Golf of the same model, year and colour as Natasha, so we already knew how to pack the luggage.

At the moment, we are at the dentist and Tanya is getting her treatment. I am next in line and writing this while waiting for my turn.

For the upcoming days, we have quite a few practical errands to take care of, but I think there will also be some opportunities to relax on the countryside before we go back to Novosibirsk on Saturday.

Off to Siberia

After Sweden there was a lot of work, both in the office and also some in the garden.

Now it is time for a week off and we are about to depart to Moscow in less than an hour. We will wait a few hours at Sheremetyevo and then we continue to Tolmachevo airport in Novosibirsk. Tanya’s cousin will meet us in Novosibirsk and then we will take a look at Novosibirsk before continuing to Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk. The weather in Novokuznetsk seems to be warm and sunny, like here in Zurich now.

Summary of Sweden trip

We are waiting at the gate in Arlanda, in order to go home to Adliswil, and it is time to summarize our summer visit in Sweden.

After a quick visit in Stockholm on Friday morning, including a visit at Rasmus place in Danderyd, we continued to Luleå and on Friday evening we met with grandmother and grandfather at Majorsgatan. It was the first time Tanya met both my grandparents and we had a good time.

On Saturday we went to Råneå Kyrka and attended Ann’s and Mats’ wedding ceremony. It was a very beautiful ceremony and we also enjoyed the celebrations afterwards at Melderstein Herrgård.

We stayed in a cottage at Melderstein and on Sunday we were invited to my cousin Johan, his partner Marie and children Emil and Evert, in Sävast. It was of course very nice to catch up with them as well. After staying at their place until Monday, the tour continued at Lars’ and Maria’s summer place between Boden and Luleå. Apart from my parents and Jakob, we met grand parents, uncle and uncle’s wife, cousins, cousin’s partners and little Nova and had a very nice dinner by Luleå älv.

The last night in Sweden we stayed in the cottage my parents were renting at First camp. Apart from good swimming facilities (when weather allows), they had good wifi connection covering the whole area. Camping has made some huge improvements lately in some parts of the world 🙂

Now I have three full days of working ahead of me in order to finish some things at work.

On Friday the Olympic games will start and for all Google Calendar fanatics out there, I recommend to import a suitable calendar. I imported the full program, almost 600 events, in order to stay updated. I hope Google can afford the SMS reminders 🙂

Swedish tour

On Thursday evening we took the last flight to Stockholm after some drama involving our dog Freja. Freja had injured herself just three hours before take-off but Tanya went quickly to the vet and sorted it out in time before flying.

Rasmus met us at Arlanda and hosted us hospitably in Danderyd. On Friday morning we did some quick touristing in the city centre of Stockholm before heading back to Arlanda around noon for our flight to Luleå.

On Friday evening we met with my grandmother and grandfather who live in Luleå. Later on, the Västerås (mom, dad, and Jakob) and the Gothenburg division (Joel and Ayse), who arrived by car, joined us.

In a few hours it is time for my cousin Ann to get married in Råneå and we all look forward to this spectacular event 🙂

On Sunday and Monday we will catch up with our relatives in this area of Sweden, before flying back on Tuesday afternoon.

Extending the wireless network

There are many recipes out there describing how to extend the wifi range with Pringles cans etcetera. I went for a more traditional method when I deciding to improve the signal strength on the first floor in the house. (I have a laptop in the washroom so that one can see when the washing machine (or dryer) is finished.)

I have an old Netgear router with dd-wrt firmware and one can configure it to act as a repeater/bridge. By following these instructions it worked like a charm on first attempt.

Midsummer and photos

Midsummer eve is obviously not a holiday in Switzerland and we did not do anything extraordinary. On Saturday, Midsummer day, we walked to Nordiska in the afternoon for a picnic by the lake. There is a nice path through the forest from Adliswil to Wollishofen which is very nice for Freja.

The last two years I have been to the Nordiska midsummer party on Saturday evening but not this year. We walked home in time for the Euro 2012 quarter final between Spain and France and after that started to clean the apartment which is a slightly more daunting task now that Freja has moved in.

I promised to put some pictures in the web gallery, and now there is a Ukraine album. I also recommend Rasmus’ album from their day trip to Chernobyl.

Everyone is back home

We came back to Adliswil on Monday morning and after work I was very tired. I don’t know how I managed to go back from Moscow on Monday mornings every second week or so before. Maybe something happened after turning 30…?

Today in the morning Tanya and I went to Schänis, a 45 minute drive from home, to pick up Freja who has spent the last week at the breeder’s summer place 800 meters AMSL. She had not forgotten us and we were happy to see that she was doing fine. In the evening we have washed her in spite of Freja clearly expressing her disapproval. She was pretty dirty after a week on the countryside so it was definitely needed.

We have not taken care of the post processing of the photos from the Ukraine trip but within a few days you can expect some to show up in the gallery.

Last day in Kiev

It is Sunday noon and we are soon heading to Pozata Hata for a massive brunch.

The weather is still exellent and forecasted to reach 30 today.

The plan is to do visit some remaining sightseeing objects during the afternoon and the evening and then take a taxi to the airport very early tomorrow morning.
