One month after the trip we have finally compiled some pictures from Tanya’s camera and published them in the web album. Enjoy.

This weekend we have done shopping, household duties and a visit at Klinger’s place in Uster. One thing that was a bit unusual this weekend was that I did morning running both yesterday and today. But still, not too much to report here.

Time flies and we are now only two weeks from the Christmas break. I am looking forward to the same setup as last year, Västerås over Christmas and then Novokuznetsk over New Year.

In-and-out operation in Moscow

Last weekend Fredrik, Tanya and I went to Moscow for a 40-hour-Moscow-adventure. Tanya went there on Thursday and Fredrik and I followed on Friday evening.

When Tanya was going on Thursday morning she tried her best to surprise us both by checking the boarding time on her second boarding pass (from Vienna to Moscow) and not for the first leg, Zurich-Vienna, when setting the alarm clock the day before. When we woke up in the morning it was too late to catch the plane and we had to organize new tickets for a flight in the afternoon. We could at least book a return ticket for her next Moscow visit in two weeks (we only had Zurich-Moscow booked earlier) when booking a new roundtrip ticket.

Fredrik and I took the planned flight and arrived early Saturday morning to Sheremetyevo. Unfortunately our taxi driver was an hour late so the start of our Moscow was far from perfect.

Since we had access to our hotel room from 2 pm we went to Pavel, a friend to Fredrik, to get some rest. We went via Katya’s place, and picked up Tanya, before proceeding to Pavel and there we slept until noon. In the afternoon we checked in at our apartment hotel at 20 First Tverskaya-Yamskaya, and walked down Tverskaya towards Red Square. We had a massive lunch/dinner at Elki Palki at 5/6 Tverskaya. Tanya and I were there in May with our parents and it was great this time too.

After our over-eating-session we continued by foot to Red Square for some sightseeing and to restaurant Stolovoya 57 in GUM for some snacks and drinks. A sightseeing session in Moscow would not be complete without a visit to Arbat, so we did that before heading to Peter’s and Yana’s party. They live close to Paveletskaya so we could get there without problems. It was a great party with a nice mixture of Americans, Russians, and Swedes.

On Sunday Tanya and I met with Alexander, Irina, and Artiom at a Shokoladnitsa café close to our apartment hotel. It was nice to catch up with them but I noticed that my Russian has degraded this autumn since I have not spent as much time in Moscow as during spring time.

In the afternoon we took the train back to Zurich and it was nice to catch some sleep before going to office next day.

Back from Sweden visit

Tanya and I were in Sweden over the weekend to meet with Kapten, other friends, relatives, and parents. It was a great weekend and we had a packed schedule with good experiences. Among our memorable events this weekend we have after-work at Clarion Hotel, walk at Djurgården with Johannes, Ulrika, and Rasmus, AIK-Brynäs at Hovet, dinner at Clarion Hotel, lunch and relaxing with relatives and parents.

The web photo albums were updated recently and there is more to come.

Currently I am working on upgrading my old iPhone 3GS to the latest iOS.

October update

We are already deep into October and yesterday also the weather in Zurich realized that is is now truly autumn. September, and the first days in October, offered really pleasant weather; 20-25 degrees Celsius and mostly sunny. When going rollerblading last Sunday for example, one could easily believe it was July if one would only draw conclusions from inspecting the weather conditions. Yesterday and this weekend there will be a lot of rain but it does not matter too much, there are still many nice things to do.

This morning Tanya flew in from Moscow and I picked her up at the airport. Since she did not get too much sleep tonight and she is having a rest now while I am typing silently. It is probably wise for her to get some sleep since we are soon going to Nordiska’s kräftskiva (fermented herring party). I did attend last year but it will be Tanya’s and Sam’s premiere. I hope they will like the food as well as the company but I am not totally convinced yet regarding the first item. It is a 10 year anniversary so I am prepared for an excellent evening.

Last weekend, when visiting Mr Roubert and observing the latest copy of NZZ am Sonntag, I once again thought it would be a good idea to subscribe to Neue Zürcher Zeitung, at least NZZ am Sonntag, which is delivered weekly. Today I am a man of action and have signed a subscription request. This might also be a part of Tanya’s and mine aspirations in requisitioning proper knowledge in the local language (or at least high German).

Some people have been asking when Tanya is coming to Zurich on a more permanent basis without flying back and forth to Moscow too much like I used to do earlier. She will go back to Moscow twice in the next month but only quick visits (Thursday to Saturday) in order to fulfill some final assignments for the university. Apart from these trips to Moscow, of which I will only attend one of them, and a visit to Stockholm in the last weekend in October, we will be in Zurich in October and November.

Today I went out for some running in rain, or “jogging” if one should be more honest and precise, but it has not been enough of workout sessions lately. It is not too boring if one is enjoying a decent audio book meanwhile and now I am listening to Brobyggarna (English: The bridge constructors) by Jan Guillou. It is the first book in his series about the 20th century (Swedish: Det Stora Århundradet). For others who are considering reading this book, there is a review from Dagens Nyheter. Knowledge in Swedish or the usage of Google Translate or similar is useful.

Weekend in Geneva

On Friday evening Tanya took a flight to Geneva while Saab and I simultaneously drove from Zurich. After picking up Tanya at the airport we went to the city center and checked in at our hotel. Our old Saab has turned on a motor error indicator again but I hope it is one more of those harmless hoses and there is still no smoke from the engine…

It is Saturday morning and the weather forecast seems to hint about indoor activities. We have our umbrellas within reach and are soon ready to hit the streets. We have heard about chocolate and cheese production and today is also the final of La Batie – Festival de Geneve whatever that is so I hope we will have a great day here in Geneva.

The plan is to stay here until tomorrow morning and then go back to Zurich via Montreux.

NFS in Debian Squeeze

Early this morning I left Gothenburg and after a detour via Amsterdam I was back in Wollishofen around lunch time.

This weekend I have, among other things, upgraded one of the servers to Debian Squeeze (6.0). In the latest stable release the system defaults to NFS4 instead of NFS3. This had an impact on my setup where NFS and autofs are used to automatically mount the user directories from the file server running OpenSolaris (which speaks NFS in version 2, 3 and 4). The solution is said (in the Ubuntu NFS4 howto) to be to configure the same mapid domain on both machines but for me it appeared not to help.

The solution – stick to NFS3 🙂 If you are in the same situation you can achieve this my by adding the options “fstype=nfs,vers=3” to your autofs configuration. This is an example from my autofs configuration of the home directories:

* -fstype=nfs,vers=3,rw mrq:/export/home/&

Visiting Gothenburg

I arrived to Gothenburg yesterday and today in the evening I will visit Dan Söderström who has invited for dinner. Weather is great and it is nice to be back in Gothenburg.

Today at lunch time Julia and I had lunch/breakfast at Andrum.  Two days ago I had dinner at another vegetarian restaurant, Hiltl in Zurich, the only difference was that the price was three times higher in Zurich.

After arriving around midnigh Joel and I took care of one of servers which had experienced some stability problems  lately. It seems like it was an overheating issue due to three out of four fans being defect. We quickly replaced them and so far it seems to make a difference.

Tomorrow Dan Söderström and I will take care of some practical issues and watch some football. A work-out session at MAK is scheduled around lunch time. I have lost a lot of strength since we used to work-out together regularly but it will be interesting to see how much.

The plan is to bring the sewing machine back to Zurich on Sunday. It fits nicely in the luggage and with some clothes acting as cushioning I think it will work out well.

Next weekend there is a “IT 2001 reunion” in Linköping. It would be great to meet again but I am not sure yet if it fits my schedule.

Rant about tweaked form posting / Formulärpostande för händiga

Short summary in English since I happened to write it in Swedish initially.

When dealing with poorly coded web pages where you intend to submit form data, and javascript validation prevents you from doing so despite you knowing what you are doing, there is a generic piece of advice which might be handy to be aware of. In decent web browsers like Chrome and Opera (or via Firebug for Firefox or IE DevToolbar for IE) you have developer tools at your fingertips which gives you the possibility to manually set the properties for form elements before submitting. In my case, when trying to submit a complaint at lufthansa.com, there was a defect javascript that prevented me from using their over-engineered select-airport-feature. By manually setting the airport codes via Opera’s developer tools I could successfully submit my complaint.

Nån gång ibland råkar man ut för dåligt kodad formulärvalidering som gör det omöjligt att skicka formulärdatat trots att man har koll på vad som ska fyllas i.

Nyligen ville jag klaga på att Lufthansa misshandlat mitt bagage men Lufthansas webbknackare gjorde det inte lätt att komma med åsikter då de försökte ladda externa javascriptfiler som inte fanns vilket gjorde att knappar inte visades som de skulle.

Ett generellt tips i såna situationer är att ta hjälp av de utvecklarverktyg som följer med kompetenta webbläsare (läs: Chrome och Opera) och som annars finns som plugins (typ Firebug för Firefox och IE DevToolbar för IE). Med hjälp av dylika verktyg kan man ibland komma runt dylika elakheter genom att “manuellt” sätta de egenskaper som den defekta webbsidan tänkt sätta via diverse javascript. I mitt fall kunde jag manuellt sätta flygplatskoderna när Lufthansas välja-land-välja-flygplats-popup misslyckades totalt med det till synes enkla.

I det ovan nämnda exemplet var det ännu värre, deras filuppladdning fungerade inte i Opera (dock i Chrome) tack vare taskigt kodad Javascript. Inte helt överraskande är det samma företag som lyckades producera ett boardingpass med fel datum tidigare i våras…

Jag vill tro att Lufthansa är rätt skickliga på att skicka runt flygplan och passagerare men helt iland är de ännu inte med de datorsystem som de exponerar för sina kunder.
